What a boring machine is, and what are the five variables in the boring process?

The boring machine is a machine tool designed to machine finished parts, for both cylindrical and tapered holes or internal threads, aimed at obtaining greater geometrical accuracy and less surface roughness.

The five main variables that define a boring operation are as follows:

  1. Cutting speed and tool rotational speed: thefirst is the speed of the tool on the surface to be machined, while the second is calculated in relation to the cutting speed and the greater bore diameter being made, expressed in revolutions per minute.
  2. Feed rate: is the axial travel of the tool or the speed at which the tool penetrates the material.
  3. Boring depth: based on the characteristics of the part and the power of the machine, this is the radial distance of the tool in its work.
  4. Power: this is the power of the machine, expressed in kW and which conditions the machining process
  5. Time: the boring time, or the time taken by the tool to make one pass.

Another of the main characteristics of boring machines is the machine capacity to work the part both vertically and horizontally. For this reason, machines can be classified into the following types:

  • Vertical boring machines: With a configuration similar to a vertical lathe, for this type of machine, the tool remains in a fixed position except for its axial travel, while both the part and table move.
  • Horizontal boring machines: In this case, the spindle supporting the tool is set in a horizontal position, hence its name. The part is positioned on a swivel table and the tool position is adjusted in order to perform the desired operation.

With more than 20 years´ experience, at NC Service we´re specialists in the retrofitting of milling machines. However, we are also extending our business with the sale-purchase of other types of second-hand CNC machines for chip removal, such as boring machines.

Our stock of used machinery currently includes a SACEM MST 130 horizontal boring machine with a longitudinal travel of 2,500 mm and horizontal travel of 2,600 mm. It has a power of 22 kW and 18 main spindle speeds (5 - 1,000 RPM) while the feed rate for all axes in  continuous variation is 3 to 2,500 mm/min for all axes.

This is a second-hand horizontal boring machine in very good operating condition. To learn more about this machine or about our stock of second-hand industrial machinery, please feel free to contact us!
